Brutus

Brutus was the 14th pup in his litter. He was the smallest and so was pushed aside when it came feeding time. A friend of the breeder had just been diagnosed with cancer and offered to take and care of this puppy, with the understanding that the breeder would take him back and find him a home when the time came. It was a good deal. The pup had hands on care and thrived, the woman had someone to love and take her mind off of her sad fate. When she passed away 3 months later, the puppy with no name was returned to the breeder.
At the same time I was recovering from open heart surgery and was not much enjoying life. Our local veterinarian told us the story of this special great dane puppy that needed a home. I had always admired the breed and had long ago mentioned to my husband that I would like to have one of my own. He convinced me that now would be a good time to add a great dane to our family. He was right. Brutus did not give me time to mope around feeling sorry for myself. He got me out walking and playing and soon I forgot to be sad.
Brutus died when he was seven, and we are very grateful to him for every bit of those seven years. He was always gentle and polite, and he was a constant companion. It has been over 3 years since Brutus left us and we think of him every day. Brutus was that once in a lifetime friend and we will miss him always.

Loxley

Nearly six years ago my wife and I met Val. We were excited to hear that she was part of the Southwest Great Dane Rescue and originally asked if we could see some of the female Danes for adoption. Val agreed, so we met at her house in last January of 2001.

Once we arrived at her house we met, and fell in love with, a male named Loxley. He was about 5 years olf when he was rescued by SWGDR. At the timw we met him he wasn't actually ready for adoption. The truth is, Val was already becoming attached because he was such a loving dog. After a month or so of getting to know us, Loxely was ready to come home.

We spend the next 6 years with our "dear boy, "Mr. Bubbles:. Loxley recently passed ayaw, Monday January 15, 2007. There simply aren't enough words to express how much we love him andmiss him. To us, Loxley was our son.

On a happier note, we want to thank Val (and SWGDR) for giving us the opportunity to adopt him 6 years ago. He truly changed our lives and we cherished EVERY second we spent with him. We love you Mr. Bubbles!
